What will I do in the program?
- Receive simple information about how you can eat well and not feel deprived
- Learn how to build activity you love into your day without taking up a lot of time.
- Create a clear vision for what you want and why
- Identify your strengths so that you can use them in your health journey
- Take a look at your current life priorities and where your health sits on that list. We may also look at how your life priorities might be creating stress (which can be one reason we hold on to weight).
- Make clear plans for each week with micro-goals that are achievable so that you feel ‘I can do it’!
- Focus on increased energy, more balanced mood, happier bowel movements, reduced bloating, better sleep, stronger body etc. not on counting calories or kilos
- Create a strong buddy system to carry you into the future
My coaching approach
My approach to coaching is informed by Internal Family Systems (IFS).
What is so powerful about this model is that it really works with those parts of you that are in conflict about your health goals. For example, here are just some of the parts that may come up when we talk about weight loss:
- a part of you that wants to look thinner /more toned etc because of the enormous cultural and media pressure on us to look that way
- a part that wants to lose weight for health reasons
- a part that feels you are not sexually attractive unless you lose weight
- a part that feels disgusted or internally shamed by your weight
- a part that has been shamed by someone else for your weight
- a part that eats for emotional comfort
- a part that eats to numb yourself
- a part that eats a certain way (or that eats a certain kind of food) under stress
- a part that has strong ties between food and culture, or between food and family traditions
- a skeptical part that has tried to lose weight before (or perhaps many times before)
- a part that feels like a failure when it comes to losing weight
- a part that doesn’t want to feel ‘deprived’
- a part that feels confused about all the different messaging around food
- a part that feels frustrated by the weight gain that comes with hormonal change
- a part that feels ‘lazy’
That’s a lot of parts, right? So it’s no wonder that when it comes to weight loss, things can get challenging.
And very often these parts are in conflict with each other, which is one of the main reasons why people find it so hard to attain and maintain their weight loss goals. Therefore, a key part of my approach is to help you identify and work with these parts of yourself so that you can be really clear about what they want and why. And by welcoming, respecting, and befriending all these parts, it becomes much easier to make daily choices from a place of balance.
For example, if you are comfort eating for emotional reasons, it is very important that you don’t take that comfort away without first getting the permission of that part of you. It is also crucial that you get curious about, befriend and sit with that underlying emotion. Additionally, you may need to find other ways to comfort that part of yourself, whether that’s through eating a different kind of food or through a totally different method of self-care altogether.
Ultimately, rather than making decisions that seem to operate on auto-pilot, you will be eating mindfully.
